Compensation for lost, delayed or damaged baggage

In the event of lost baggage, the airline is responsible for the damage suffered by the traveller. This was established by the Montreal Convention, which provides for compensation of up to approximately 1,550 Euros, except for a special declaration of value made by the passenger at the time of check-in.

In the event of problems relating to checked baggage - for which the identification tag was issued upon delivery at check-in - the passenger must complete the so-called report of loss or damage to baggage. It is important to have the event ascertained before leaving the baggage reclaim area by contacting the Lost and Found office present in all airports in the area reserved for the collection of checked baggage and filling in the form commonly known as the PIR  (Property Irregularity Report).

Even in the case of delayed baggage, the passenger can request compensation for the inconvenience suffered, as well as reimbursement of expenses incurred to meet their needs up to the baggage delivery.

When, on the other hand, the baggage has been damaged, it is possible to obtain compensation from the airline provided that the damage suffered can be demonstrated, for this reason we recommend that you take a photograph of your baggage before handing it over to check-in.

In all cases it is essential to fill in the PIR and forward the request to the airline within 21 days (under penalty of forfeiture), keeping the documents relating to the flight, the PIR, the baggage identification tag and the receipts for any goods purchased in replacement of personal effects contained in lost or delayed baggage.
